Hardcover. 1673-4. Small 4to. Second Edition - Effective First Edition (see below). pp. [34], 1-131, verso blank, sep title page (Appendix.) dated 167, [1], blank, 136-162, [1] errata, verso blank, seperate titlepage for the Second Part dated 1673, pp. 1-84, [4], sep title page dated 1973, 87-118, sep titlepage dated 1673, [119]-170, sep titlepage dated 1673[171]-312, sep title page undated, [313]- 334, then mispaginated 135-176, [1] errata. Rebacked original late 17th century calf boards with deep red Morocco spine label and raised bands. Worn leading corners to old boards. Later spine in fine condition. Internally, complete with a chip to corner of two leaves in preface (not affecting text). Few light watermarks. 1" closed tear to foot margin of p256. Old pencil binder instructions to front pastedown. A very attractive copy of a very Rare & early Quaker title. Bronner & Fraser Penn Bibliography 22B. Bronner & Fraser state that a 1673 First Edition must exist due to mention of "Christian Quaker" in "Reason Against Railing" 1673 - they then frustratingly state that "None reported extant". This copy came from the library & archives of descendants of George Whitehead & family and there was no evidence of a 1673 edition in that library (sadly no signatures etc within the text to reference to the Whitehead provenance) but does hold up as substantive evidence against a first edition in existence).
