Le Carre's father/son relationship was difficult. Ronnie Cornwell was an associate of the Krays and made and lost a fortune a number of times due to elaborate confidence tricks which landed him at least once in prison - it is said that this upbringing helped lead to Le Carre's fascination with secrets.
