Du Maurier's extremely rare first novel. The title is derived from a poem by Emily Bronte. Du Maurier started work on the book in 1929 at Ferryside - the Du Maurier's Cornish holiday home near Polruan and opposite Fowey. It is based on real events and places but names have been changed; Polruan becomes Plyn and the Slade family become Coombe.
