Abel Chapman was a Sunderland born hunter-naturalist. He saved the Spanish Ibex goat from extinction. Chapman travelled the world, particularly East Africa, studying and shooting both wild game & game birds. Many of his stuffed specimens can be seen in the Sunderland Museum & the National History Museum.
