Ward, Lock & Co, 1945.
First edition, first printing. 8vo. Red boards with black titles. Pictorial dustwrapper. A very good copy. No chipping or splitting to cloth. Some light mottling to boards. Small patch of fade to top left corner of spine where dustwrapper previously bent back. Neat ink name to endpaper which nicely corresponds to the original pictorial wartime book token used to purchase the book which is now loosely laid in. The very good dustwrapper has one very small chip to bottom right foot of back panel. Nicking and short tears to some other extremities. Original price of 8/6net to front flap. A very good copy of a title seldom found in collectible condition.
The first Poldark title. Ross Poldark arrives home in Cornwall from the American War of Independence to find his childhood sweetheart, Elizabeth Chynoweth, who presumed him dead, engaged to his cousin Francis Poldark. Ross tries to restore his fortunes by opening one of the family's derelict tin copper mines. Ross subsequently meets Demelza and falls out with his childhood friend [?] George Warleggan and Winston Graham's timeless classic Cornish saga begins.
