The Jungle Book & The Second Jungle Book.
Macmillan, 1894.
Blue boards with gilt titles & vignettes to boards. All edges gilt. Housed in an early 20th century felt lined blue gilt double decker Morocco slipcase with folding blue felt lined chemise within. A fine set. Clean and bright boards with very bright gilt indeed. A few light translucent marks only to boards. Very bright gilt titles & edges. Provenance - attractive heraldic bookplate of Walter Russell, Baron Brain of Eynsham (medical statesman, poet & outstanding physician who made important contributions to neurological knowledge besides writing the standard British textbook on the subject) to front endpaper of vol i. Quite unbelievably, none of the usual foxing to either volume & no inscriptions. No cracking to original black endpapers. A superb set of this cornerstone of children's literature.
Classic children stories told by an adult. The best known are the "Mowgli" stories - an abandoned Indian boy brought up by wolves and educated in the ways of the wisdom of the jungle by Baloo, the bear, Kaa, the python and Bagheera the panther. The stories are a mixture of magic, myth and fantasy.
